SAP acquires Business Objects

Albeit a little late to the game, SAP has intensified consolidation in the BI/BPM space.

Their acquisition of Business Objects, Pilot, and OutlookSoft adds an incredible mix of technology to the SAP stable. One can not overlook that Business Objects itself was on an acquisition spree (SRC, Cartesis, etc.) in recent days.

As a company not experienced in quickly digesting acqusitions, it will be interesting to see how quickly SAP can produce a straightfoward roadmap that meets the requirements of its incredibly diverse customer base.

With extensive experience watching and understanding how other companies (Oracle, Infor) have accomplished similar initiatives we will continue to keep our clients informed as to their options.

Why would SAP acquire mutliple business intelligence vendors?

SAP's strategy in Business Intelligence has not met with "market acceptance". Oracle moved first to shore up their BI options by acquiring Seibel's BI product and Hyperion -- they forced SAP's hand.

This is a major change in direction for SAP. They had previously acquired some strong "tuck in" options with Pilot and OutlookSoft.

SAP must have decided they did not have the time to wait on these or allow Business Objects to be acquired by a competitor.

They had previously recommended and sold Business Objects for BI so many of their clients use this software.

A potential acquisition of Business Objects by a competitor such as Oracle would have been catastrophic for SAP.
